Antonio Ramirez – A History of Latino Elgin ​​​​​​

This project aims to document and disseminate the history of Latinx Elgin through the voices of its residents. Inequity can take many forms, including but not limited to, racial, economic, or gender-based inequities. However, cultural inequities, like failing to be represented in the stories a community tells about its past and future, are also powerful.  Read more…

Cristina Colunga – Raices 

My project Raices, roots in English, is a series of paintings that focuses on the migration story of my grandparents and my family from México to Elgin. I will also incorporate the stories of other Latino families that migrated to Elgin from Latin America and Puerto Rico. Read more…


 
Maria Carpio Chavarin – Mujeres Latinas Unidad en el Arte y Bienestar 
 

This project intends to serve Hispanic women in Elgin, who as a group experience inequality in access to community resources that help them take time for themselves, support them with stress, and develop self-esteem. Read more…


Maria Valdez – Elgin Coalition for Immigrant Rights  

At the Elgin Coalition for Immigrant Rights, many of us have experienced or currently face the struggle of being undocumented or have been in community with someone who is. Our mission is to provide resources to have an empowered, informed community that defends and protects undocumented immigrants from the threat of deportation. Read more…

We are a non-profit organization, our budget is limited, and we have always experienced difficulty finding a physical space where we can practice. In fact, we have had to practice outside many times suffering the inclement weather. Read more…

Our project seeks to address some of the current inequities in Elgin’s transportation systems. Our inadequate public transportation system and car-dependent built environment serve to further disadvantage those of us with physical or cognitive impairments and low to no incomes, as well as increase environmental hazards to those of us who live within the city limits. Elgin Math and Science Academy 

This p​​​​​​​roject, “Amplifying the Pieces of Us: Stand Up Stumps” is a public art project that will allow students in grades K-5 to understand what it means to advocate for what we teach in weekly lessons at our school as J.E.D.I- Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion. The project will help them help others understand messages of unity and understanding to combat racial inequities in our community.
